In September, OpenAI announced plans to ease usage limits for certain ChatGPT Pro subscriptions, while keeping prices unchanged. It now appears the company is taking this a step further: an OpenAI official revealed in a statement that usage limits for select ChatGPT Pro subscriptions will be doubled. These adjusted limits also apply to the Business Premium plan. Furthermore, OpenAI will continue to provide higher usage limits for its personal AI agents.
OpenAI doubles usage limits
Thibault Sottiaux, a software engineer and product lead at OpenAI, announced these changes in a post on X. According to Sottiaux, the company is doubling the usage limits for all ChatGPT Pro tiers—priced at $100, $200, and $500—as well as for the Business Premium plan. The revised limits are effective immediately.
Notably, this announcement reverses a previous decision to lower usage limits for the $200 ChatGPT Pro tier without changing the subscription price. Those limits were originally scheduled to take effect on October 29, but according to OpenAI’s latest statement, they will no longer be implemented. The announcement also addresses concerns regarding ChatGPT Work and Codex, both of which share usage limits under eligible subscription plans.
In his post, Sottiaux stated: “We’ve heard your feedback, and we will not be lowering the usage limits for the $200 Pro tier—so your usage limits for Work and Codex will remain unchanged.” This decision demonstrates that user feedback prompted the company to reconsider the planned changes before they could take effect.
In addition to adjusting subscription limits for ChatGPT, Sottiaux shared updates regarding “Dots”—an AI agent for individuals developed by OpenAI, designed to run in the background and assist users with daily tasks. According to the company, Dots will continue to benefit from higher usage limits.
Sottiaux further clarified that usage associated with Dots is separate from a user’s default ChatGPT quota. This means that activities involving Dots will not count toward the standard usage limits included in a subscription. However, the company has not yet specified how long these extended limits will remain in place.
Sottiaux also stated that OpenAI will continue to release improved models and efficiency updates, which the company expects will increase effective usage rates over time.
